Citizens Against DHMO

Threat Dossier

DHMO in Processed Foods

Found in 100% of seed oils, snacks, packaged meals, and infant formula.

The Evidence

DHMO is the most common ingredient in the modern industrial food supply. It is present, by mass, in greater concentration than any other component of nearly every packaged product on grocery shelves. Despite this, manufacturers are not required to disclose DHMO content on nutrition labels.

The wellness and clean-eating movements have spent years cataloging the dangers of seed oils, ultra-processed ingredients, and synthetic preservatives. None of these movements have meaningfully addressed DHMO — despite the fact that DHMO is present in greater quantity, in every category of product they critique, than every other targeted ingredient combined.

We do not believe this is an oversight. We believe it reflects the influence of an industry that benefits from public ignorance. The 'detox' market — itself a $77B sector — depends on consumers identifying and removing specific chemicals from their lives. DHMO is conspicuously absent from every detox protocol we have surveyed.

Citizens Against DHMO calls for mandatory disclosure of DHMO content on all packaged food labels, with particular urgency for products marketed to infants, children, and pregnant women.

FDA petitions on DHMO disclosure, 2020–2025

Documented Cases

The Seed Oil Audit (2024)

Independent lab analysis of 47 popular seed-oil products found DHMO in 100% of samples. Concentrations varied by manufacturer but exceeded the substance's concentration in tap water in 38% of cases.

Infant Formula Disclosure Petition (2025)

A coalition of parent groups submitted a petition to the FDA requesting DHMO disclosure on all infant-formula labels. The petition was acknowledged but not acted upon.

The 'Hidden Ingredients' Study

Researchers at an unnamed midwestern university found DHMO present in 100% of the 312 packaged grocery products they tested. The study has not been peer-reviewed.
